Puma Energy employs AXYS WatchMate for Terminal Operations

February 24, 2012

AXYS Technologies Inc. (AXYS) is supplying an oceanographic and meteorological data collection buoy to Puma Energy, an integrated mid and downstream oil company headquartered in Geneva with operations in Africa, the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

The AXYS WatchMate™ buoy will be used to provide meteorological and oceanographic data for terminal operations at the Puma Energy facility in San Jose, Guatemala. Data collected by the buoy will assist with vessel traffic logistics and terminal scheduling. AXYS Field Service technicians will travel to Guatemala to provide system training and re-commission the buoy in the Spring 2012.

“The WatchMate buoy has huge momentum as the metocean buoy of choice in Latin America. The oil and gas industry in the region has accepted the buoy as the reliable choice for terminal operations and offshore E&D requirements”, says Chad MacIsaac, Marine Systems Business Development Associate at AXYS Technologies.

AXYS_WatchMate_buoyThe 1.8m WatchMate™ buoy is a rugged, lightweight environmental monitoring buoy that maintains the requirements of a navigational aid. The solar and battery powered buoys are configured with an extensive range of environmental monitoring sensors, including directional waves, ocean currents, and wind speed & direction. Data from the buoy is collected by AXYS’ proprietary onboard WatchMan500™ data acquisition system and transmitted to a shore station by UHF telemetry. Puma Energy personnel will access buoy system information and environmental data at their terminal office using AXYS’ Data Management System (DMS) software, as well as via the web using the DMS web display interface SmartWeb™. Using the two-way UHF telemetry, the DMS software is capable of remotely re-configuring specific parameters on the buoy such as sensor sampling periods and transmission intervals.

Formed in 1997 in Central America to develop a comprehensive network of oil storage and distribution facilities, Puma Energy has since expanded its activities worldwide achieving rapid growth, diversification and product line development to become one of the largest independent global downstream companies.

Puma Energy’s activities in the midstream sector include the supply, storage and transportation of petroleum products. Its downstream activities include the distribution, retail and wholesale of a full range of refined products.  For more information visit http://www.pumaenergy.net/
