s Maritime Domain Awareness

Maritime domain awareness means having timely information about everything on, under, related to, adjacent to, or bordering a sea, ocean or other navigable waterway that could impact security, safety, the economy or the environment. This includes all related activities, infrastructure, people, cargo, vessels, or other means of transport. For marine security, it means being aware of anything in the marine domain that could threaten a country’s national security. And with over 90% of the world’s trade transported by sea, it is more critical than ever to operate secure maritime operations.

AXYS offers a networked data solution to manage the specific monitoring requirements of a port security system for maritime domain awareness. Utilizing the WatchMan500 network solution and AXYS’ Data Management System (DMS) software, a complete operational picture of the maritime domain can be provided to the ports’ operational centre for the purposes of command and control. AXYS offers secure data hosting services to clients and can provide the information needed to the ports’ operational centre for real time decisions related to the maritime domain.

s WatchKeeper Buoy

The AXYS WatchKeeper™ buoy is a 1.7m diameter polyethylene buoy designed for deployments in coastal areas, lakes, reservoirs and rivers. The WatchKeeper™ hull is internationally proven as an aid to navigation (AToN) and can be deployed in water depths from 20m to 500m.

  • Custom configurable with a wide range of sensors for monitoring meteorological, oceanographic and water quality parameters.
  • Frequently deployed in port environments to provide port operators with real time environmental data, while also acting as a traditional AtoN.

s NOMAD Buoy

The AXYS NOMAD is a unique aluminum environmental monitoring buoy designed for deployments in extreme conditions. The NOMAD (Navy Oceanographic Meteorological Automatic Device) is a modified version of the 6m hull originally designed in the 1940’s for the U.S. Navy’s offshore data collection program. It has been operating in Canada’s Weather Buoy network for over 25 years and commonly experiences winter storms and hurricanes with wave heights approaching 20m.

  • Custom configurable with a wide range of sensors for monitoring meteorological, oceanographic and water quality parameters.
  • A watertight central compartment houses the electronics payload, and there are two masts for mounting meteorological sensors, telemetry hardware, solar panels and obstruction lights.
  • Uses the WatchMan500™ controller to integrate sensor systems and provide onboard data processing, data logging, telemetry and diagnostic/set up routines.
  • A variety of telemetry options are available, including UHF/VHF, Inmarsat IsatData Pro, Iridium, GPRS/HSPA and CDMA/EVDO.

s HydroLevel Buoy

The HydroLevel buoy accurately monitors water level elevation in any body of water. HydroLevel™ is a precision instrument incorporating the latest GDNGSS and motion sensing technologies, making it the leading solution for an accurate, easy to use, rugged product for the measurement of water elevation.

  • Available in any buoy hull or as a payload. Typical deployments have included payload, Mini (0.6m), Standard (0.9m), and WatchMate buoy (1.8m).
  • The HydroLevel™ buoy uses leading GNSS receivers to provide real time accurate three dimensional position by the Global Differential NGSS (GDNGSS).
  • When used during hydrographic surveys, the buoy will enable the depth & contours of the seabed to be corrected for the true water surface elevation changes, as measured on the absolute three dimensional International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) using RTK or global Precise Point Position (PPP) techniques.
  • GDNGSS measurements provide solid earth tide corrections and the HydroLevel™ buoy GNSS receiver incorporates these real-time correctors at the position and time measured by the GNSS receiver.
  • In addition to position measurement, a motion sensor on the buoy measures the pitch, roll and heading of the buoy in real-time.
  • Uses the WatchMan500™ controller, which integrates sensor systems and provides onboard data processing, data logging, telemetry and diagnostic/set up routines.

s TRIAXYS with Currents Buoy

The TRIAXYS™ with Currents Buoy measures both directional waves and a 3D water column profile of ocean currents in real time. The buoy is based on the proven TRIAXYS™ Directional Wave buoy platform, but has been modified to allow the integration of a current profiler in a downward facing configuration. 

  • Uses custom Nortek Aquadopp & Teledyne RDI Workhorse ADCP’s and has a modular design allowing for ADCP swapping and easy replacement
  • The ADCP provides current speed & direction from user configurable sample periods in up to 128 layers of the water column
  • Provides continuous wave sampling, support for any telemetry, up to 10 Hz motion sampling and up to 32GB (>5 years) of data logging capacity.
  • The WatchMan500 processor integrates sensor systems and provides onboard data processing, data logging, telemetry, and diagnostic/set up routines.
  • Power is derived from 4 rechargeable batteries connected to solar panels
  • Standard mooring configurations specially designed for wave and current buoys are available for water depths up to 300m.

s Telemetry

AXYS offers many telemetry options for monitoring and collecting remote environmental data. Data can be sent in virtual real time and clients are able to specify their preferred telemetry option.

Satellite

Inmarsat: IsatData Pro & IsatM2M

Telemetry Inmarsat is a high orbit geostationary satellite telemetry system operating in a ±60° latitude. The Inmarsat system consists of four communications satellites backed up by an additional five satellites that can be brought into use in the event of technical difficulties or high traffic. There are a number of different bandwidth telemetry services available through Inmarsat.

IsatData Pro offers a higher bandwidth than the Isat M2M service, with 10Kb upload and 6Kb download. Isat M2M is used for low bandwidth messaging and platform position monitoring. Both IsatData Pro and Isat M2M are capable of providing alerts along with regular data transmissions, and can be either pre-programmed or remotely triggered to send automatic messages. This transmitted data is archived on a database and available for secure client access.

AXYS is a service provider for both IsatData Pro and Isat M2M.

 

Iridium

Iridium Satellite uses a dedicated constellation of 66 low-earth orbiting (LEO) operational satellites and 14 in-orbit spares positioned at a height of approximately 780km. The satellites orbit from pole to pole with an orbit of roughly 100 minutes. Short burst data packets are transmitted to the nearest satellite and received by a gateway on earth, either directly or via another satellite in the network, and delivered to the DMS software in email format. Iridium’s two-way service avoids multiple redundant transmissions by acknowledging that data has been sent. This system is best suited to situations where large amounts of data need to be transmitted, as airtime is charged by the minute.

AXYS is a service provider for Iridium Satellite.

ARGOS        

The Argos (Advanced Research and Global Observation Satellite) system is comprised of low orbit, non-geostationary satellites. Argos satellite telemetry is a limited data communications solution for use in remote locations where VHF or cellular telemetry are intermittent or unfeasible. This telemetry option is controlled through NOAA and there are some restrictions to applications and users; users need to apply for the service.

GOES

GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) is a geostationary satellite system that provides 24-hour coverage and is generally used by governments and institutions. Interested persons must apply for its use, as there is limited access to this system. There is a cost associated with the purchase of the transmitters but the data collection is free, provided that the data is distributed on the Global Telecommunications System (GTS). GOES communications is one-way only.

ORBCOMM

The ORBCOMM (Low-Earth Orbit Satellite) system uses a network of low-Earth, near-polar orbital satellites for data and messaging communications services. ORBCOMM provides tracking, monitoring, and messaging capabilities to and from anywhere in the world, and there are no restrictions to applications or users. The system operates by transmitting the data packet to the ORBCOMM satellite, which then relays the message through one of four U.S. Gateway Earth Stations (GES). The data is then sent to the Network Control Center (NCC) via satellite link or dedicated terrestrial line. The NCC routes the message to the final addressee via e-mail, dedicated telephone line, or facsimile. Messages originating outside the U.S. are routed through international Gateway Control Centers (GCC) in the same manner.

 

Cellular

HSPA Cellular (compatible with GPRS)

Cellular telemetry offers high bandwidth, two way communications for deployments within coverage areas. AXYS clients are required to subscribe to a data plan with a local service provider. The two way telemetry is a preferred choice for near-shore deployments..

 

Radio

VHF/UHF

Radio telemetry is one of the most common methods of transmitting data from remote inaccessible installations, (water or land). Radio telemetry requires a clear line-of-sight between the monitoring system and the base station for distances up to 30 km. While antenna positioning, gain, tuning, and ambient noise can adversely affect range, our systems can be configured to send multiple transmissions to ensure a consistently high data throughput.

 

Data Logging

AXYS products include an internal data logging option. This can be used as either a backup system in the event of marginal telemetry conditions or as a stand-alone feature. Data sampled by the system is logged onto a large capacity Compact Flash (CF) Card.

s Custom Projects

Many of AXYS’ standard products are customized to meet the client’s specific monitoring requirements, however occasionally AXYS gets a request for an altogether new monitoring solution that requires an innovative custom design.

Custom NOMAD Instrumentation Buoy

Following a thorough analysis of the project’s monitoring requirements, AXYS will design a system that meets all the criteria. Rigorous project management and quality assurance methodology are followed according to an established process in order to ensure that the final system meets the client’s needs. The AXYS Services team is able to provide training on every system delivered, as well as commissioning and deployment assistance.

Wave Energy Testing Instrumentation Buoy

To help Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center at Oregon State Univeristy reach their goal of an offshore mobile wave energy testing facility, AXYS partnered with them to design a new buoy – the Ocean Sentinel Instrumentation buoy. AXYS engineers worked with NNMREC staff to develop this custom buoy system that interfaces with numerous custom control and monitoring devices, as well as basic meteorological and oceanographic parameters. The system also provides real time communications that monitor all aspects of the system performance.

Sub-Surface Environmental Monitoring 

AXYS has provided sub-surface environmental monitoring systems for a variety of challenging marine environments. With an array of sensors, including temperature, dissolved oxygen, and water chemistry, data can be transmitted to a surface buoy for processing using an acoustic modem or an inductive mooring line. Two-way communication capabilities allow remote system management, including configuration and diagnostics of both the buoy and the mooring components. Sub-surface moorings are easily recovered using acoustic releases, which can be triggered at any time, allowing the instrumentation to float to the top and leaving the anchor on the seabed.

s Water Levels and Tides

Monitoring water levels, tides and their currents is an important field of study for many applications, including ship navigation and port operations, government defense, coastal zone engineering projects, ecological studies, and even commercial and recreational fishing.

HydroLevel Mini Buoy

Traditional tide and water level monitoring uses shore-based tide gauges. The limitations to this method include availability of the land when there are permitting, operational, safety, and security challenges. If onshore tide gauges are not available, a combination of techniques such as tidal constituents databases, tidal zoning and hydrodynamic modling produce estimates of chart datums and tide correctors. This modeling is based on best available information and due to this uncertainty of model input, the water level error can be 40-60% of the total depth solution.

AXYS has developed an electronics payload using  DGPS to accurately monitor water elevation in any body of water where a surface following buoy can be deployed. In addition to position measurement, a motion sensor on the buoy measures the pitch, roll and heading of the buoy in real time. This data, along with earth tide corrections are supplied to the buoy’s processor, which performs tilt corrections, averaging and filtering. It enables depth positions to be measured on the absolute three dimensions and eliminates the need to estimate water levels The AXYS HydroLevel™ technology is available on many buoy platforms, enabling the system to be used in differing environmental conditions.

WatchKeeper Port & Harbour

An ideal environmental monitoring solution for a Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) includes moored buoys, fixed platforms and pier-based installations. Typical sensor configurations provide wind speed, wind direction, waves, current speed, current direction, and water level (tide), all managed by one data management system. AIS messages 8 & 21 are broadcast and met ocean data is transmitted in real time to port operation centers, ship operators, bridge crew, and pilots.
